Abstract
ATP-driven heavy metal pumps represent a newly defined class of protei ns that translocate toxic and essential metals across biological membr anes, These transporters form a separate evolutionary branch of the io n-transporting P-type ATPases. We propose to call these enzymes CPx-ty pe ATPases, based on the common novel feature of a conserved intramemb ranous cysteine-proline-cysteine or cysteine-proline-histidine motif.
