Lv. Nikitin et al., ON THE FRICTIONAL BEHAVIOR OF THERMALLY LOADED BEAMS RESTING ON A PLANE, International journal of mechanical sciences, 38(11), 1996, pp. 1219-1229
The problem of an elastic beam resting on a frictional surface and loa
ded by a uniform temperature moment is treated analytically and numeri
cally. The introduction of proper non-dimensional parameters identifie
s the deformation pattern which varies with monotonically increasing t
emperature load in a self-similar manner. This fact reduces the comple
xity of the mathematical system considerably and offers the derivation
of the solution on an analytical basis. Several approaches are descri
bed, discussed and compared against each other. This problem is typica
l for a broader class of problems involving Coulomb friction in beam d
eformation. In addition to the fact that it is interesting from the st
ructural as well as from the mathematical points of view, it is of pra
ctical importance, for example in the simulation of the cooling proces
ses of hot rolled railway rails. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science L
