A universal registration system is described that provides measurement
s in the positive and negative ion counting mode in a dynamic range of
10(6), based on a VEU-7 secondary-electron multiplier and a specially
designed wide-band amplifier (frequency bandwidth >200 MHz; voltage-c
harge transmission coefficient is 10(13) V/C). In the positive ion det
ection mode, the dynamic range can be increased to 10(8) by using high
-rate commutation from the counting to analog-digital regimes of signa
l detection based on a current-frequency converter (transmission coeff
icient 300 Hz/nA in the 10(-6) to 10(-9) A range).
