The first metal complex of the diester of 1-hydroxyiminophosphonic aci
d has been synthesized and characterized in the solid state and in sol
ution. Diethyl 1-hydroxyiminobenzylphosphonate forms a tetrameric nick
el(II) complex, [C33H48N3O14P3Ni2 . CHCl3](2), as monoclinic crystals,
Each high-spin nickel(II) ion is octahedrally coordinated, and diethy
l 1-hydroxyiminobenzylphosphonate acts as a chelating ligand. The comp
lex also contains two hydroxyl groups, which act as bridges between th
e metal ions. The spectroscopic data indicate that the same type of st
ructure is present in the chloroform solution of the complex. Copyrigh
