An explanation for p-type conductivity in amorphous chalcogenides is g
iven based on the role played by lone-pair electrons and charged defec
ts. Valency alternation results in thermal excitation of free holes wh
ile free electrons are not created. Neutral dangling bonds are also a
source of free holes. Existence of three-fold coordinated sites also e
xplains the anomaly of the Hall effect in amorphous chalcogenides.
