An improved analytical procedure has been developed for the detection
and identification of volatile carbonyl compounds in air. The procedur
e is based on carbonyl derivatization by 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine to
form 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives. The analysis was perform
ed by isocratic HPLC using UV detection. The procedure's reproducibili
ty is better than 10%. Besides, it has been proved that water interfer
es during the determination of ketones. So different water scrubbers h
ave been tested, but have been shown not to be efficient enough for a
quantitative measurement.
