The synthesis and coordination chemistry of sulfenic, thiosulfinic, an
d thiosulfonic acid anions are reviewed. Different approaches, which y
ield the platinum(II) and ruthenium(II) complexes containing the anion
ic sulfur(0), sulfur(II), and sulfur(IV) oxid ligands, are described.
The oxidative addition of thiosulfinates or N-sulfinyl phthalimides to
platinum(0) complexes L(2)Pt(C2H4) [L = PPh(3), 1/2 PPh(2)CH(2)CH(2)P
Ph(2), 1/2 (R,R)-(-)-DIOP, 1/2 (C(5)H(4)PPh(2))Fe(C(5)H(4)PPh(2)) lead
s to sulfenato complexes; those of N-thiosulfinyl phthalimides or tris
ulfid 1-oxides afford the thiosulfinato complexes. Moreover, the react
ions of CpRu(PPh(3))(L)(SH) (L = CO, PPh(3)) with N-sulfinyl phthalimi
des forming the thiosulfinato moiety, are reported. The spectroscopic,
structural and chemical properties of these complexes are discussed.
