Abstract
The criticality of hearing is discussed in relation to language and sp eech development in children. The fundamentals for such development, t he significant milestones in normal language and speech acquisition, a nd a delineation of the deleterious effects of significant hearing los s on the development of expressive and receptive oral communication ar e presented.
