Objective: To describe a case of neuroleptic malignant syndrome associ
ated with risperidone. Clinical picture: An elderly patient with bipol
ar affective disorder presented with neuroleptic malignant syndrome an
d relapse of hypomania after commencing risperidone. Treatment: Risper
idone was ceased and the patient monitored closely. Outcome: The sympt
oms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome were resolved. Conclusion: To ou
r knowledge this is the first such case reported, and suggests that ri
speridone, like other neuroleptics, is associated with neuroleptic mal
ignant syndrome.
