Combinations of an oil-soluble tin compound, e.g., dibutyl tin dilaura
te, with organoborates either sulfurized or nonsulfurized, give better
antiwear performance than the individual components. A synergistic me
chanism is postulated such that boron atoms with vacant p orbits catal
yze triboreduction of tin compounds on rubbing surfaces, producing ele
mental tin. The tin deposits on and alloys with the metal surface to p
rotect the substrate against wear.
