F. Rieulesme et al., A NEW H-2 CO2-USING ACETOGENIC BACTERIUM FROM THE RUMEN - DESCRIPTIONOF RUMINOCOCCUS-SCHINKII SP-NOV/, FEMS microbiology letters, 140(2-3), 1996, pp. 281-286
Two strains of H-2/CO2-using acetogenic bacteria were isolated from th
e rumen of suckling lambs. Both strains displayed a coccobacillar morp
hology and possessed a Gram-positive type cell wall. Numerous organic
substrates, including some O-methylated aromatic compounds, were used
heterotrophically. 16S rRNA gene sequencing demonstrated that the two
acetogenic isolates were phylogenetically identical and represent a ne
w subline within Clostridium cluster XIVa. Based on phenotypic and phy
logenetic considerations a new species, Ruminococcus schinkii sp. nov.
, is proposed.
