Cytomegalovirus is a common pathogen in patients infected with the hum
an immunodeficiency virus. In this article, cytomegalovirus sinusitis
is described and documented for the first time, to our knowledge. Cyto
megalovirus was cultured from the sinuses of four patients who were po
sitive for the human immunodeficiency virus and who had antibiotic-res
istant infections. In one patient who underwent surgery, cytomegalovir
us inclusions were documented consistent with invasive infection. Opti
mal treatment has yet to be determined, but in this case surgery did p
rovide temporary relief of sinus symptoms.
