Crystalline 3-ferrocenyl-3-phenylcyclopropene was obtained by dehydrob
romination of 2-bromo-1-ferrocenyl-1-phenylcyclopropane with potassium
tert-butoxide in dimethyl sulfoxide. The compound synthesized undergo
es catalytic hydrogenation to 1-ferrocenyl-1-phenylcyclopropane, react
s with 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran to give the expected product of stere
ospecific [4+2]-cycloaddition and 3-ferrocenylindene, and also undegoe
s opening of the small ring on treatment with superacids to give 3-fer
rocenylindene as the major product. The data of single crystal X-ray d
iffraction analysis of 1-ferrocenyl-1-phenyIcyclopropane and the diene
adduct of 3-ferrocenyl-3-phenylcyclopropene with 1,3-diphenylisobenzo
furan are given.
