A simple, rapid high performance liquid chromatographic adaptation of
the periodate-coupled thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method was developed f
or the quantification of sialic acid (SIAC) in supernatants from bronc
hoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF). Malondialdehyde released from BALF sa
mples in various amounts did not interfere with the accurate quantific
ation of SIAC.
