The sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability and instability
of the equilibrium position of a holonomic mechanical system acted up
on by the time-dependent forces are determined. Problems of the stabil
ization of the calculated motion of a gyroscopic system on a moving ba
se and of the conditions of stability of the equilibrium position of a
mechanical system with variable masses are solved. Some examples are
