Av. Bogomolov et al., IDENTIFICATION OF NEUTRONS AGAINST THE GAMMA-RAY BACKGROUND BY CSI(TI) CRYSTAL DETECTORS, Instruments and experimental techniques, 39(1), 1996, pp. 1-7
A method for identification of neutrons against the background of gamm
a-quanta by the light pulse shape in CsI(Tl) is studied. Using the dat
a from measurements performed at the synchrophasotron of the Institute
of High-Energy Physics (IHEP), the dependence of the light pulse shap
e in CsI(TI) on the specific ionization of detected particles in the e
nergy loss range dE/dx = 1.5-200 MeV . cm(2)/g was refined. The depend
ence of the separation efficiency both for electrons produced by gamma
-quanta and for protons generated in interactions with neutrons on the
energy was obtained within the energy range 12-160 MeV. Based on resu
lts of the present study and data taken from the literature, it was pr
oven that the method under study makes it possible to reliably separat
e electrons and protons at proton energies between 1 and 140 MeV.
