The construction and characteristics of a cylindrical multiwire propor
tional chamber constructed at the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research,
Dubna, for the investigation of pi(+) --> pi(0)e(+)v(e) decay are des
cribed. The chamber has a diameter of 120 mm and a length of 350 mm, a
nd contains a low amount of substance in the radial cross section (54
mg/cm(2)). The spatial coordinate information is obtained by processin
g of signals taken from 192 anode wires and 256 cathode strips. The st
rips are arranged on the inner and outer cathode cylinders and are inc
lined with respect to the wires. The electronic devices, intended for
testing and operating the chamber are described including the amplifie
rs forming the shapes of cathode and anode signals, the registration a
nd delay-line devices, and the corresponding controller and interface:
The results of chamber testing showed a 99% efficiency at a plateau l
ength of 400 V.
