A low-background IR camera with image translation for astronomical obs
ervations is described. The background level on photodetectors over th
e range 8.5-11.9 mu m was 10(-4) W/cm(2) or (5 x 10(15) photon/(cm(2)
s). The camera walls and translating optics were cooled with liquid ni
trogen. The cooling time was 8 hours. Daily variations of the backgrou
nd power on photo detectors were +/- 6% and were related to variations
in the ambient temperature. In most cases the nighttime background le
vel was lower.
