In a series of Kr-78 bombardments of Mo-92 the new isotopes Pt-166 and
Pt-167 were identified via their alpha-decay properties. The alpha-de
cay energies and half-lives of these two nuclides are as follows. (1)
Pt-166, E(alpha) = 7110(15) keV, T-1/2 = 0.3(1) ms, and (2) Pt-167, E(
alpha) = 6988(10) keV, T-1/2 = 0.7(2) ms. Also, the half-life of Pt-16
8, which was previously unknown, was determined to be 2.0(4) ms. In a
separate but concurrent experiment involving Kr-78 + (96)RU reactions,
Pt-170 was made and a half-life of 14.7(5) ms was measured for it; th
e one published value is 6(-2)(+5) ms. Results for Os-162-164, contain
ed in the same data sets were also analyzed and by using mother-daught
er correlations, the alpha branches of Os-162,Os-163,Os-164 were estab
lished to be near 100%.
