A geometrically non-linear theory is presented for the dynamic analysi
s of thin, circular cylindrical shells which have wafer, stringer or r
ing stiffening. An asymptotic procedure is followed which separates th
e solution of the non-linear equations of motion into two parts, an in
ner part which applies to the boundary layer, and an outer part. The r
esulting approximate equations are relatively simple to deal with. A n
umerical example is solved for the free vibrations of a simply support
