Chemical examination of the ethyl acetate extract of the soft coral Si
nularia hirta collected from the Havelock Island of the Andaman & Nico
bar group of Islands furnishes two new cembranoid derivatives besides
two known sesquiterpenes, Delta(9(15))-africanene (A) and methyl (1'E,
-dimethylocta-1',5',7'-trienyl)furan-3-carboxylate (B) and a diterpen
e, cembrene A (C). The structures of the new diterpenes have been esta
blished as mayolacetate (D) and a hydroxycembranolide gamma-lactone (E
) on the basis of their spectral (UV, LR, H-1 and C-13 NMR and mass) d
ata.
