Abstract
High pressure melting was used to increase the nitrogen concentration in iron-carbon alloys. Nitrogen concentration in the alloys followed S ieverts' Law. Increasing the carbon concentration decreased the nitrog en concentration. Alloy concentrations above approximately 0.5wt% nitr ogen and carbon resulted in stabilizing the austenitic phase and elimi nated the formation of nitrides and carbides.
