Abstract
Mechanical alloying (MA) of iron nitrides and ferrous nitrogen solid s olution is studied and discussed in order to determine which role does an interstitial such as N play in the MA process and what is the infl uence of the N-2 molecule in respect to the reaction between the gas a nd the solid phase. Emphasis has been put on the influence of ball mil ling conditions on the microstructure. The conditions for transferring laboratory result to an industrial process are discussed.
