PbI2/CdI2 superlattices (multi-quantum well) have been grown by a hot
wall epitaxy. Characteristic peaks due to a long period of superlattic
es appear on X-ray diffraction patterns. From the analysis of these pa
tterns, thicknesses of both PbI2 and CdI2 layers of prepared samples a
re identified. Optical measurement shows that exciton transition energ
ies in PbI2/CdI2 superlattices shift to the higher energy side with th
e decrease in thickness of PbI2 layer. The analysis of this shift by t
he variational calculation of exciton and the observation of strong ex
citon peaks indicate PbI2/CdI2 superlattices belong to the type I supe
rlattice. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
