Thiram-contaminated poultry feed caused soft egg shells, depressed gro
wth and leg abnormalities in about 1 million birds. Corn previously tr
eated with thiram and colored red was the source of the contamination
as detected by gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy examinations.
Standardized color-recognition for treated grain products could have a
voided this situation and speaks to the international adoption of such
standards.
