We discuss the two-photon absorption rate of helium excited with synch
rotron light in the vacuum ultra-violet domain. A numerical estimate i
s made, based on the measured third-harmonic generation rate. It is fo
und that, for typical experimental conditions with synchrotron radiati
on, the rate is very large for vacuum ultra-violet Free Electron Laser
s currently under construction, but rather small for the existing undu
lator sources.
