Abstract
The amino acid sequence of the rat 60S ribosomal subunit protein L6 wa s deduced from the sequence of nucleotides in a recombinant cDNA and c onfirmed by determination of amino acid sequences in the protein. Ribo somal protein L6 has 296 amino acids (the NH2-terminal methionine is r emoved after translation of mRNA); the molecular weight is 33,417. Hyb ridization of the cDNA to digests of nuclear DNA suggests that there a re 7 to 10 copies of the L6 gene. The mRNA for the protein is about 1, 100 nucleotides in length. Rat L6 is related to ribosomal proteins fro m other eukaryotes and to histone H1.
