Petroglossum undulatum Schneider (Rhodophyta, Phyllophoraceae) is reco
rded for the first time outside the deep water of North and South Caro
lina. The apparently disjunct distribution of this species may be attr
ibuted to insufficient collections in the intermediate geographic area
s and to the similarity of the external morphology of this species to
that of two species of Cryptonemia, with which it grows in association
. A detailed description of Brazilian material and comparison with a t
opotype of P. undulatum from North Carolina are given. Gametophytes we
re known from the type collections and tetrasporangial plants are desc
ribed here for the first time.
