The paper considers methods for investigating the main mechanisms of e
lectrical degradation of high-voltage cable insulation - water and ele
ctrical treeing, based on video microscopy with video enhancement of c
ontrast and digital image processing. Results of the investigation are
given. The equipment used, its possibilities and also the theoretical
principles of electronic analog video enhancement of contrast are des
cribed. The fractal properties of treeing and processes of oxidation o
f dielectric materials within a water tree are analysed. Opportunities
for studying the dynamics of tree growth by means of computer video m
icroscopy are indicated. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights res
