Plants of Cedrela fissilis and Anadenanthera colubrina were placed in
non-flooded soil control, flooded soil with stagnant water, and floode
d soil with running water during 60 days. After appearance of adventit
ious roots and/or hipertrophic lenticels some plants had adventitious
roots excised and hipertrophic lenticels covered. The relative growth
rate and respiration rate of roots were studied. From the results pres
ented it seems that in C. fissilis and A. colubrina the survival strat
egies are distincts. C. fissilis developed morphological adaptations t
hat supports the aerobic respiration but don't allow the growth. On th
e other hand A. colubrina produced few hipertrophic lenticels and the
respiration rate was low. This indicates that an anaerobic metabolism
supplied the energy requirements and allowed the growth.
