Abstract
The effect of argon on the ionization potential of H2S was investigate d by means of field ionization for a wide range of argon densities bet ween the gas and the triple point liquid. The ionization potential dec reases monotonically with the host density and its width exhibits a ma ximum at around the critical density. The latter is attributed to the broadening of the ion-medium polarization energy distribution and is d ue to the fluctuations in the microscopic structure of the fluid.
