The S-34 + alpha system has been studied both experimentally and theor
etically, Excitation functions of the S-34 (alpha, gamma) Ar-38 reacti
on have been measured over the alpha bombarding energy range E(alpha)
= 3.4-4.4 MeV. The low background provided by the 100% enriched(implan
ted) target allowed one to observe 10 new resonances, some of them att
ributed previously to the S-32 contamination of the target. Decay sche
mes, spin-parity values, reduced electromagnetic transition probabilit
ies and resonance strengths have been determined, A semimicroscopic al
gebraic S-34 + alpha cluster model has been used to describe the new r
esonances together with the low-lying states of the Ar-38 nucleus. Thi
s analysis indicates that the J(pi) = 1(-) resonances may not be good
candidates for the first slate of a K-pi = 0(-) band predicted to star
t in the E(x) similar or equal to 10-11 MeV region.
