Abstract
The finite element-quadratic programming (FE-QP) approach for problems involving frictionless contact between an elastic body and a rigid ob stacle is presented in a general setting. The validity of this approac h is first proved in the context of small deformation problems. Then a way to extend it to the case of large deformation problems is propose d, and the validity and implementation of this procedure are discussed . Numerical examples involving Euler-Bernoulli beams are presented to demonstrate these issues, and to show the regimes where the method is successful or failing.
