Abstract
This review covers alcohols and some other oxygenates as spark ignitio n engine fuels of Likely interest in the near future, particularly wit h the worldwide phasedown in lead additives. Indication is given of th eir costs and benefits, especially from the exhaust and greenhouse emi ssions standpoint. Implementation procedures and changes in associated safety risks are identified where appropriate. It is concluded that w hilst there are niche markets for several of these alternative fuels, there is no evidence that their benefits are so large that they cannot be achieved by modification to the future vehicle oil refinery system .
