We propose a novel soliton generator based on graded-nonlinear wavegui des, The advantage over current uniform-nonlinear devices is that most of the power of the guide is transferred by the first emitted soliton at a distance determined by the input power, Multisoliton emission is thus avoided, and the device can be used as a variable-power single-s oliton generator, as a linear scanning element, or as the basis for mo re efficient soliton couplers.
