Enigmaster scalaris gen. et sp. nov. is described from one large speci
men taken near the Auckland Islands, to the south of New Zealand, at a
depth of 520 m. Though referred to the family Goniasteridae, unusual
features of this species are: the presence of ?muscular bars across th
e ambulacral furrow; apparent absence of suckers on the tube feet; irr
egular marginal plates interradially; pores through some abactinal pla
tes; pores between some actinal plates.
