X-ray (AlKalpha) photoelectron spectra of valence, core, and Auger ele
ctrons for an amorphous carbyne specimen and samples obtained by bomba
rding with 1.2-keV argon ions were measured. No argon lines were obser
ved in the spectra of irradiated samples. Under given experimental con
ditions, irradiation of the starting film with ions for 15 min provide
s effective cleaning of its surface from oxygen and fluorine, leaving
the dominant type of carbon-carbon bonds virtually unchanged. A half-h
our irradiation results in accumulation in a carbyne-like matrix of ca
rbon clusters having the sp(2)-hybridization of valence states, which
is most profoundly displayed in variation of spectra of satellites to
carbon 1s lines.
