Abstract
A two-dimensional cellular-automaton (CA) model is proposed for a semi conductor laser system, showing qualitative behaviour in agreement wit h actual performances. The relevance of this approach to the descripti on of the switching on of catastrophic optical damage in the active ma terial and the subsequent dynamics is discussed. Promising aspects are underlined such as the possibility of describing complex-geometry cav ities or laser cavities that are changing in time.
