COUNTERION SPECIFICITY OF THE MICELLE SURFACE AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ONMICELLAR CATALYSIS

Dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide - Dodecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide - water mixtures were studied with ion-selective electrodes, and the a ggregation behavior, degree of ionization of the micelles and the dist ribution constants of bromide and hydroxide ions between water and mic elles were found, showing that some suppositions about the interpretat ion of micellar catalysis are incorrect, and these interpretations mus t be revised. The results support the mass action model for the theore tical treatment of micellar catalysis.
