Abstract
In this paper a pulse shape analysis method developed for the GALLEX s olar neutrino experiment is described. It is generally applicable to l ow background experiments which use proportional counter detectors in conjunction with high resolution pulse shape recording. The method is based on a fit of an analytical expression describing a single or mult iple ionisation event to the recorded pulse shape. This approach serve s to reveal the microscopic charge deposition structure from the recor ded signal. Utilizing this information, suitably parameterized, for ev ent selection allows for high sensitivity background discrimination on an event-by-event basis. Results for different types of events are pr esented.
