M. Wilhelm et al., THE RESPONSE OF THE EUROBALL CLUSTER DETECTOR TO GAMMA-RADIATION UP TO 10 MEV, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section A, Accelerators, spectrometers, detectors and associated equipment, 381(2-3), 1996, pp. 462-465
The Euroball Cluster detector consists of seven closely packed hexagon
al encapsulated germanium detectors which are mounted in a common cryo
stat and surrounded by a EGO suppression shield, By adding back the Co
mpton scattered events between the seven germanium detectors the detec
tor system behaves similar as a single germanium detector with a volum
e of 2000 cm(3). The response of this very large germanium detector to
gamma-rays up to 10 MeV has been measured using a short lived Al-24 s
ource produced at the Cologne FN Tandem accelerator. At 10 MeV the eff
iciency of the Cluster detector is nearly one order of magnitude large
r than that of a 30% germanium detector.
