dagger The authors wish to dedicate this article to the memory of Prof
essor Wolfgang Oppolzer, who passed away on March 15, 1996. Professor
Oppolzer's contributions to the art and craft of organic synthesis and
his energetic career were cut short by this untimely tragedy, which h
as left a serious void in the synthetic community. His intellectual ca
pacity and his style of problem solving served as an example and inspi
ration to many of us. Tomas Hudlicky was a postdoctoral fellow in Gene
va during the early years of Professor Oppolzer's academic career. He
credits much of this success as an independent investigator to the men
torship he received in 1977-78 from Professor Oppolzer; he is deeply a
ffected by the loss of one of the great practitioners.
