The wave diffractor is a pyramid-shaped element to reduce shocks origi
nating from wall deflections. The novel element is tested in terms of
optimum geometry, and effects of Froude number, among others, and a si
mple shape is introduced. The device is not susceptible to cavitation
because a local aerator can be combined with the wall deflection, and
abrasion is also not a concern. Shockwaves can be significantly reduce
d in height by the device which can also be added to existing chutes.
The diffractor is interesting for all locations where the required fre
eboard due to the shocks becomes excessive and a local device is more
economic than an overall increase of the chute side walls.
