Abstract
Empirical data from neurosciences, useful for a neurobiological charac terization of consciousness are revised. It is postulated that the con sciousness content is produced by an analog to digital conversion at t he receptor level, followed by a cortico-subcortical digital to analog conversion in the brain. Facts at the cellular level suggest that inf ormation is transmitted in that way -Receptor local potential (analog) nerve impulses (digital)- Post-synaptic excitatory or inhibitory pote ntial (analog). Data from neurosciences that support the hypothesis of a learning dependent cortico-subcortical localization of consciousnes s are revised. Corneal transplants in blind adults, phantom limb pheno mena and sensory deficits, as Anton-Babinski syndrome, are presented. Also, the hypotesis that postulates the reticular formation as the pla ce where awakening and attention integrates, is revised using the resu lts of recent non-invasive brain exploration methods.
