K. Boschert et al., KETAMINE AND ITS USE IN THE PIG - RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE CONSENSUS MEETING ON KETAMINE ANESTHESIA IN PIGS, BERGEN 1994, Laboratory animals, 30(3), 1996, pp. 209-219
Ketamine, when used as a mono-anaesthetic, does not appear to induce s
urgical anaesthesia in the pig. The addition of other drugs such as op
ioids, benzodiazepines and alpha(2)-adrenergic agonists deepens anaest
hesia and enables major surgery to be performed. A decision-tree for t
he rational use of ketamine for both short and long-term anaesthesia i
n the pig under three different levels of procedure severity is presen
ted.
