Abstract
In the present paper the effects of precocene on N. lugens strains obt ained by successive selection for adults with specific wing form under highly crowded conditions over 70 generations are reported. When prec ocene II was applied, macropterous adults developed from presumptive b rachypters. Our results also demonstrated the disruptive effects of pr ecocene II on metamorphosis, and we report here the induction of preco cious metamorphosis in N. lugens in details for the first time. The se nsitive periods to precocene II, affecting wing dimorphism and metamor phosis, differed between the two strains. (C) 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
