A technique for generation of high power pulses based on a fast SMES h
as been developed and a model of a power modulator for linear accelera
tors was built. The basic function of the modulator that generates 2 m
s long, approximately 1 MW power pulses at a repetition rate of 10 Hz
is described in this paper, A modular construction of the SMES that co
nsists of up to six coils has been chosen to meet the demands of sever
al applications in high energy physics and energy distribution, The ra
te of change of magnetic field achieved during ramping of the magnet w
as more than 60 T/s without a quench, The magnet was designed with res
pect to the high AC losses during repetitive ramping of the SMES. The
suitability of mined matrix superconductors instead of more expensive
net frequency wires for this kind of AC stress was investigated, The a
pplied mixed matrix Cu/CuNi/NbTi wire and the construction of a single
coil is described.
