The design and construction of a permanent magnet wiggler for generati
on of soft X-rays at the new 1.5 GeV electron storage ring MAX II in M
AX-lab, Lund, Sweden is reported. The 2.65 meters long device has 27 f
ull field poles with a peak field of 1.8 tesla, which produce a total
power of 2.2 kW of soft X-rays (up to 15 keV photon energy) at the nom
inal beam current of 200 mA. The device was installed in the MAX II st
orage ring in 1994, to serve in the commissioning phase of the acceler
ator. The corresponding beamline should become operational in 1996.
