Two huge superconducting magnets Pre proposed for the future detectors
of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN : the ATLAS toroidal syste
m and the CMS solenoid, Both deigns are based on the use of large alum
inium stabilized conductors, built from a cable coextruded with very p
ure aluminium and, in the CMS case, mechanically reinforced with alumi
nium ahoy; these conductors are now developed by different manufacture
rs under research contracts handed by CERN, This paper presents result
s of the critical current density of both strands and cables at differ
ent stages of the conductor fabrication, the effect of different treat
ments on the aluminium residual resistivity ratio (RRR) and the charac
terization the bonding between the cable and its stabilizer.
