The uptake of radioactive hydrogen sulfide in a hydrogen stream by MoO
x/Al2O3 alone, and by catalysts containing Co, Ru, Pd, Ir and Pt was s
tudied. The amounts of the uptake differ for different catalysts, wher
eas the ratio of strongly bonded sulfur to the total sulfur uptake was
practically equal. The amounts of reversibly bonded hydrogen sulfide
increased at decreasing irreversible uptake. Comparison with data obta
ined previously for uptake by catalysts exposed to thiophene indicate
the absence of competition between uptake of thiophene and H2S and a r
eduction of the ratio of strongly bonded hydrogen sulfide due to the p
resence of hydrogen sulfide produced in hydrogenolysis of thiophene. E
xposure to cyclohexanol hinders the uptake by MoOx/Al2O3 and by sample
s containing Pd and Pt whereas uptake is enhanced on Co-, Ru-, and Ir-
containing catalysts.
